Mulching Guide: Benefits, Timing, and How Much to Use

Mulch does more than just make planting beds look sharp. It plays a key role in keeping your landscape healthy, especially during the warmer months. From conserving moisture to suppressing weeds, mulching is one of the most effective and low-maintenance steps you can take to support your plants.

Whether you’re starting a new garden bed or maintaining existing landscaping, the right mulch applied at the right time can help your soil stay healthy and your plants thrive.

What is Mulch and Why Matters?

Mulch is any material you spread across the surface of the soil. In our area, we primarily use organic bark mulch made from natural wood materials that slowly break down and add nutrients to the soil over time.

The benefits of mulch go well beyond looks:

  • Moisture retention: It keeps water from evaporating too quickly, which is especially helpful during dry spells.
  • Weed suppression: It limits how much light reaches the soil, helping prevent weeds from sprouting.
  • Soil protection: It helps regulate soil temperature and prevents erosion during heavy rain.
  • Root insulation: It protects plant roots from sudden temperature swings.

In southern Maine, where summers can fluctuate between hot, dry weeks and periods of heavy rain, mulch adds consistency and stability to your landscape.

When to Mulch In Southern Maine

For new planting beds, we recommend a layer of 2 to 3 inches. This provides enough coverage to retain moisture and suppress weeds without overwhelming plant roots. For beds that already have mulch, a refresh layer of 1 to 2 inches is usually enough.

You don’t need to remove old mulch unless it has compacted heavily or built up over time. We’ll assess each bed individually to determine the right approach.

It’s important to avoid piling mulch directly against the base of trees or shrubs. This can trap moisture and lead to rot or pest problems. We always leave space around the trunks and stems to promote healthy airflow and drainage.

Choosing the Right Mulch

We recommend using natural bark mulch for most planting beds. It looks clean, breaks down gradually, and improves the soil as it decomposes. One type of mulch we do not recommend for garden areas is rubber mulch. Although it’s often marketed as a long-lasting solution, it doesn’t improve the soil, can retain excess heat, and may contain unwanted chemicals. It’s better suited for non-plant areas like playgrounds, not garden beds.

Should You Mulch Every Year?

Yes. We recommend mulching annually for most properties. Even if your mulch hasn’t fully broken down, a fresh top layer helps restore color, renews weed protection, and maintains moisture control. Skipping years often leads to thinner coverage, more weeds, and drier soil.

Annual mulching also keeps your beds looking their best throughout the season. A light refresh each year ensures your landscape stays clean, protected, and low-maintenance.

Is Mulching Part of Spring Cleanup?

We get this question a lot. While mulch is often installed around the same time as a spring cleanup, it’s a separate service. Cleanups focus on leaf removal, pruning, and bed preparation. Mulch installation happens afterward and is scheduled based on weather, soil readiness, and the condition of your planting beds.

If you’re interested in having mulch installed, let us know early in the season. That gives us time to evaluate your beds, plan around any new planting, and source the right material for your space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install mulch? Yes, we offer mulch installation as a standalone service. We will deliver, spread, and clean up when we’re done.

How often should I re-mulch? We recommend mulching annually. A fresh layer each year keeps your beds in top shape and prevents problems before they start.

Can I mulch over weeds? Mulch works best when applied to a clean bed. We recommend removing existing weeds before installation for best results.

How do I know if I need new mulch or just a top-off? If mulch is thin, faded, or not controlling weeds like it used to, a 1 to 2 inch top-off can restore performance and appearance.
