Gorham is inland enough that spring arrives a week or two later than the coast and frost comes earlier in fall. We schedule plantings from mid-May through June and again in September, which is the best window for trees and shrubs here. Hardscape projects run from late spring through November.
What's under a Gorham yard
Gorham covers about fifty square miles and is drained by three rivers: the Presumpscot along the Windham line, its tributary the Little River, and the Stroudwater, which runs east toward Portland. That drainage pattern shapes the ground. Low land along the river valleys can hold the blue-gray marine clay of the Presumpscot Formation, a glacial deposit named for the river where it is most visible, while higher ground is more often sandy loam and gravelly till. Brickmaking was one of Gorham's old industries, and brick was the classic use of that clay.
The two soils ask for opposite things. Clay stays wet in spring, heaves in winter and cracks in a dry August, so patios and walkways on clay need a deeper compacted gravel base, a way for water to leave the base, and a surface pitched away from the house. Plantings on clay go in slightly high with the root flare at grade. Sandy ground drains in hours, so it needs compost worked in before planting and mulch afterward to hold moisture. Figuring out which one a lot has is one of the first steps of a Gorham landscape design.
New construction lots
Gorham grew from 14,141 residents in 2000 to 18,336 in the 2020 census, and much of that growth came as new subdivisions on former farm and wood lots. A new-build yard usually arrives with a thin layer of loam over compacted fill, a seeded or hydroseeded strip, and nothing else. Before trees, shrubs or a lawn go in, that ground often needs loosening and amending. Privacy is the other common first request on an open lot. A mixed screen of evergreens and native shrubs suited to Maine yards fills in faster and holds up better than a single-species row, and it gives birds and pollinators something back on land that used to be field.
Water, wells and the rivers
Homes around Gorham Village and the denser neighborhoods are generally on public water from the Portland Water District, while many rural properties in North, West and South Gorham rely on private wells. On a well, heavy lawn irrigation competes with the household supply, so we lean on drought-tolerant plantings and watering new plantings deeply but less often, as in our irrigation tips for Maine landscapes.
Properties near the Presumpscot, the Little River or the Stroudwater can fall within Gorham's shoreland zoning under Maine's Mandatory Shoreland Zoning Act, which limits tree clearing, earthmoving and new structures near the water. Check with the Town of Gorham Code Enforcement Office before planning clearing, grading or a new patio or wall on those lots. Where a project is outside those limits, patios, walkways and retaining walls are built to the same freeze-thaw standard we use across Southern Maine.
